The 3 Bad Oral Habits That Strongly Affect Your Teeth

Bad Oral Habits - Newmarket Dentists - Davis Dental CareThere are so many simple things that we do in our day to day life that affect our teeth. We often don’t realize it until its too late. With all bad oral habits, its best to recognize them earlier than later so you can address the problem and prevent all the adverse effects it will have on your teeth. Bad oral habits include:

Thumb Sucking

This habit happens especially with infants and young children who suck their thumb as a form of comfort. If done at a critical stage in tooth development it starts to affect the permanent teeth structure. Long-term effects of this habit include:

  • Teeth being pushed around which might cause an overbite, underbite or open bite to form.
  • A lisp being formed because constant thumb sucking can affect the jaw bone positioning
  • The roof of the mouth becoming altered or more sensitive

Bruxism (Teeth Grinding/Jaw Clenching)

This is a habit that is often unconscious and involves, grinding, clenching or gnashing of teeth. This can happen when either awake or asleep. Bruxism in most cases is associated with stress, anxiety or even just fatigue. Over time bruxism leads to attrition (wearing down of teeth), which can cause your teeth to become brittle and sensitive. It can also lead to the possibility of losing those teeth altogether. Other than affecting your teeth, bruxism can also cause severe jaw/muscle pain and headaches.

Nail Biting

Nail biting is another habit that many persons have and tend to do unconsciously. Biting your nails can have adverse effects on your teeth.  Over time this habit can cause your teeth to chip, erode (wear away), as well as become sensitive. This habit like bruxism can also be associated with stress and anxiety.

Breaking your bad oral habit can lead to saving you money and your teeth in the long run. Feel free to contact with our Newmarket dental office so that you can learn about the options to help prevent the adverse effects they can have on your teeth.
