It’s that time of the year again, HALLOWEEN!
Halloween is all about dressing up, having fun, and most importantly, indulging in a lot of treats! Consuming a lot of sugar-filled goodies is one of the main causes of cavities but, that doesn’t mean you have to stop celebrating Halloween.
If you maintain proper oral hygiene throughout the year (brushing and flossing daily), you are fine to binge a little bit on the sweets.
To learn more how candies affect your teeth, here’s a list of common types of candy you will receive during Halloween and their effect on your teeth:
Sticky and Gummy Candies – one of the worst candies as it sticks to the teeth making it harder to remove. This gives cavity-causing bacteria more time to do their job!
Chocolate – One of the most popular candies handed out but is one of the better ones! It is easily dissolved and washed away in the mouth. Dark chocolate also has less sugar than milk chocolate.
Sour Candy – Sour candies are usually coated with sugar and are sticky. They are harder to clean off your teeth and are more acidic. The acidity causes enamel wear which makes your teeth more cavity-prone and sensitive over time.
Hard Candy – Be careful with these as they can cause tooth chips and breakage. Also, these candies tend to be held in the mouth longer in which the sugar dissolves into your saliva and washes all over your teeth.
Popcorn balls – a combination of hard, sweet, and chewy, popcorn can also get stuck in between your teeth. Sometimes, a piece of the shell can get caught in the gums which may be painful.
